Calm Chaos (commissioned by Die Zeit)
‘It’s positive when you realise that you
don't need a lobster dinner or fly to a European city to
spend the weekend. I feel it’s healthy once in a
while to get grounded’. The words are
Sindri’s. Son of Sigurgeir. 35 year old. Sheep
farmer. Teaches too. In the highlands of Borgarnes he
lives of the land thinking about the bankruptcy. A year
has passed. At ground zero some Icelandic people were
facing personal bankruptcy, while others found a
strengthened unity from building networks, something new
for a nation of islanders with the habit of supporting
one self. The shiny auto campers have stopped passing by
the kitchen window from where Sindri Sigurgeirsson and
his wife have a clear view of the road while they take
their coffee break, so perhaps the Icelanders are
afterall discovering new grounds to land their feet on.
